The Homestead Stand

In the summer of 2017, we found ourselves overrun with eggs, so we decided to put up a stand in our front yard to make them available for those driving by to purchase them from us. We thought of calling it, The Egg Stop.

Well, my husband took that idea and it grew from there.

Not wanting to build any permanent structures, he decided to convert an old trailer into a roadside farm stand.

Instead of just selling off our abundance of eggs, we figured we could also offer excess produce from our garden.

So, we needed a name that would communicate more than just eggs for sale.

Given that we consider ourselves to be running a homestead instead of a farm, we settled on the name “The Homestead Stand“, and I got to work on making a sign for it.

Then, we expanded the end of our driveway to accommodate an easier turn in (and turn around). We laid down gravel and built a stone wall border in the front corner of our property.

Then my husband parked the stand, created a few parking spots, and added on a temporary deck.

We installed a fridge and locked cash box, laid down some carpet and put up an awning, acquired some whiteboards and decorative pieces to dress it up some.

Before long we were open for business.

That first year was a success as far as we were concerned. We met some of our neighbors and were able to share from the produce of our land: eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers, pears, and okra.

Presently the stand is closed.
