The Prodigal Bird Returns
Look who decided to come home!
Betcha didn’t know we had a peacock. Well, we did for about three days, and then we didn’t for I-don’t-know-how-many months now.
The day he arrived on the homestead we locked him up in a coop to get him acclimated to his new surroundings.
Then, shortly before sunset on the third day, we let him out, thinking he’d roam just a little but not too far.
Well, he promptly flew off, never to be seen here again.
We received word within a few days from a neighbor about a peacock sighting. I told her that must be the one that got dropped off at our place.
I said, if they didn’t mind, they could keep him wherever he was, because we had no idea how to catch him & get him back, let alone how to keep him here, if he was just going to fly wherever he wants to go.
Months went by, and my neighbor continued to give me updates on the bird, showing me pictures & videos she took with her phone. (They have considerably more acres of land than we do.) I was just glad somebody got to enjoy his presence.
Then, Saturday night, I was informed he returned to us, so I snapped a few photos through my dirty bedroom window, as he modeled his feathers for me.
The next day he was gone.
Here it is three days later, and he’s back.
Who knows where he’ll end up staying.
As far as I’m concerned, he’s a wild animal. While we’re happy to have him here and he seems to play nice with the other birds, he may decide to fly off again. And if that’s the case, so be it.
He’s certainly a beautiful creature, though. Don’t you think?
